Moishe’s Bake Shop on 2nd Ave. between 7th and 8th always has graffiti on the front window. Inside, gentle ladies man the glass counters and sometimes you can say hi to Moishe, but not on Jewish holidays because they are closed. I have had their black and white cookies, hamentashen, bialies, and some crumbly cookie I thought was Mexican.
What if Birthright Alumni all decided to choose a Shabbat on which to host a sponsored Birthright NEXT Shabbat and then to all make fitting purchases at Moishe’s? Supposing that Moishe’s is suffering and needs to regenerate a base of consumers, would we not then become a WE capable of landscaping lower east side Jewish establishments? Would we get brownie points for collectively serving a platter of black and white cookies par excellence? We could generate hits on a website built solely out of pics depicting mouths on strudels. Would Moishe, who is friendly, finance said website? Would a Jewish philanthropist? Why not?
